Horisont join this week’s BBB Show

Featured

With haunting 70’s sounds harking back to the time when rock n roll ruled the world, Horisont immerses the listener into a timewarp. High on a plane of Deep Purple drumming, the momentary sound of the classic twin guitar harmonies could lead you to believe this is some obscure cut from Thin Lizzy back catalogue. But oh no, these swedish boys called Horisont know their heritage and craft their knowledge wisely. Now 10 years in the game they have tapped into a world where NWOBHM and the Scandinavian retro-rock revival still runs wild. Live-evil and Muskelrock festivals shed light on the denim clad nation that is rising up from the underground.

Finally appearing on my radar late 2015 with the album ‘Odyssey’, their second album ‘Time Warriors’ (2013)  has been on heavy rotation this past year.

With their recent departure from Rise Above Records the new signing to Century Media records sees the Swedish quartet release the new album ‘About Time’ February 3rd 2017. Scheduled for more tours and another appearance in the US due April/May 2017   it looks like there is no stopping Horisont.
Out on their first tour on US shores, I  catch up with the boys at the sold out Starline Social Club in Oakland, California. Tune in to hear us chat about Horisont’s first time to the states, plus news on their new album ‘About Time’ and upcoming tour dates.

The Lusus Naturae album was laid upon the slab earlier this year and will clearly be the strong foundation for a virile career for Beastmaker. The fresno threesome are adding all the right ingredients to tap into the ever growing and cult-like doom circuit. From occult themes to classic hammer horror throw backs, these guys have it all. The mastermind behind the whole operation is none other than front man Trevor, his vision back in 2006 would take the guys in many a musical direction before reaching today’s outlet. But those 10 years were well spent perfecting their craft and realising what they wanted to achieve as a band. It’s safe to say that this isn’t just your average doom band.. although their lyrical content may come from the deepest depths of hell, the riffs are forged from the 70’s NWOBHM style that have been cited in influencing megastars Metallica, Megadeth and developed the sound that we all know today as Thrash metal. The band takes the best of diverse influences from Angel Witch, Danzig, Pentagram, Witchfinder General and alike, paving the way for the Beastmaker sound.

This week I am joined by founding member and mastermind behind the wondrous Psychedelia of Witchcraft; Magnus Pelander. The peerless band truly stand alone as a poignant part of Swedish rock music.

With numerous stories surrounding their formation, the band pay homage to seminal bands such as Pentagram and Roky Erickson. Debuting with the track “No Angel or Demon”. 61x-mkxiblThe guys were soon picked up by Lee Dorian of Rise Above Records, with a three album deal with the label, which saw the band etch their sound into the 21st century rock scene.

However, it wasn’t until the release of their fourth album “Legend” through new label Nuclear Blast, that Witchcraft finally received critical acclaim for their unique sound. Now back with their second release on the label the new album ‘Nucleus’ see the band step back to their roots with undertones of their debut album and a side helping of pure Doom!

Gentleman’s Pistols drop in on this week’s Barnett’s Brutal Brunch show

Starting life as a three piece punk band from Bradford, England the guys of Gentleman’s pistols soon jumped ship to neighbouring town Leeds. Whereupon, they shifted themselves away from their cruder sonic roots to create a more significantly guitar driven sound with the addition of a fourth member.

From The Sweet to Deep Purple, James (Atkinson, vocals) had identified a sound that he wanted to give life to with the band, with a shared musical taste the guys soon put out a few 7 inch singles in 2006.

The following year saw Gentlemen’s Pistols release a self titled album through new label Rise Above records and quickly hit the rock headlines, sending ripples through a tired music industry in the UK.

With a second album ‘At Her Majesties Pleasure’ and the recruitment of Bill Steer into the band the four-piece from ‘oop North successfully toured around Europe, hitting the road hard with Scissorfight, Witchcraft, Circulus, Firebird, Leaf Hound and Saviours amongst others.

After a 4 year break Gentleman’s Pistols are back with a new record label (Nuclear Blast) and a brand new album ‘Hustler’s row’.

Released in October the album sees the guys move forward with not just melodic guitar hooks but genuine vocal power and prowess.

The first single from the album can be heard below. Tune in this week as I catch up with founding member and frontman James to chat about the new album and the development of Gentleman’s Pistols.
