Joining me from “the other side of the river” (New York) this week I chat via phone with Alan Robert bassist and founding member of Life of Agony. With a 12 year gap since their last release, the much anticipated album ‘A Place Where There’s No More Pain’ was released last month. Tune in as Alan and I chat about the start, the middle, the hiatus, then middle again and the future for Life of Agony.
Let’s take it back to the beginning shall we… The Summer of 1989 with Hardcore and thrash music dominating the New York scene, Life of Agony decided to mix all those elements along with a nice helping of groove metal to form their own band. Sitting out there on their own they, the band, just averaging 21 years old, put together the album ‘River runs red’ in 1993, which conquered that year’s music charts, that’s for sure and projected the guys into the rock n roll lifestyle. The album sent shock waves throughout the metal music scene and became one of Roadrunner’s best selling albums of all time.
By 1995 the release of ‘Ugly’ followed by the 1997 ‘Soul Searching Sun’ were released, but cracks began to form within Life of agony. After a lengthy hiatus the band bounced back in 2005 with the album ‘Broken Valley’, but issues with the record label and personal pressures, soon saw the band again break away from the business.
Now back with a brand new studio album and a completely new lease of life, the band have put together a monumental new release ‘A Place Where There’s No More Pain’ . Now signed to new label Napalm Records, the album hits the shelves April 28th.
What the label say; The drive and intensity these ten blistering new tracks possess, surpass all expectations that built up in the past 12 years – a cathartic Sturm & Drang experience for the listener that matches the ferocity of River Runs Red with gut wrenching rock melodies. Raging guitar riffs, heartfelt lyrics and killer grooves mark the return of LOA’s signature sound and turn A Place Where There’s No More Pain into a passionate, soul-searching affair.
The birthplace of classic rock giants the Scorpions to the thrash metal Teutonic trio Kreator, Sodom and Destruction; Germany remains one of the most heavy metal countries in Europe and the source of many a band. However, this week’s guests are somewhat removed from a purely heavy metal lineage and share more in common with psychedelic, spacerock and blues bands of the 1960’s and 1970’s, Amon Düül, Ash Ra Tempel and contemporary peers Colour Haze and Samsara Blues Experiment. I am joined this week by frontman Nick Van Delft of psychedelic blues rock outfit Zodiac.
Starting the band in 2011, Zodiac made waves in a short time with their eponymous debut EP and their first album release “A Bit Of Devil”. It wasn’t long before Napalm records soon snapped up the band and released album “With A Hiding Place” closely followed by the huge success of album “Sonic Child” which made it’s way up the German charts. With all that said, there is much anticipation for their upcoming fourth album: Grain of Soul (released 29th July).

Crash landing in North Carolina, the boys from the Morning Star were birthed on the Earth on the eve of Easter 2001. Soon after hitting the stage the band vowed to their first audiences that they would take over every major city on Mother Earth. They stayed true to their word! Known to earthlings as Valient Thorr, the band have created untold havoc on the eardrums and underwear of this planet’s inhabitants for the last 15 years. Behold their magnificence and tremble foolish humanoids!
From a self produced video to being signed to Napalm records. The short life of Nervosa has been somewhat of a rollercoaster ride. Conceived whilst in previous bands, the members gave up everything to form Nervosa. Born on the South American road, Nervosa were soon picked up by Destruction frontman Schmier who took the band under his wing and showcased their music video via social media. Within a short time the video had gathered tens of thousands of views on youtube, earning them a great deal of noise throughout the world.
Their blinding debut album release “Victim of Yourself” sent shockwaves throughout the metal industry gaining the Brazilian trio the credibility they so richly deserve. Nervosa are now back with a second album “Agony“.
What the label says:
Brazil`s meanest power trio has returned: Nervosa indulge in relentlessly raw all-female thrash metal on their second studio album Agony that almost effortlessly merges the energy of the glorious 80s with the refined aggression of this millennium. Played even more on point and precise than debut Victim of yourself (2014), it definitely enriches the Nervosa sound having transferred the production to the USA: the South American riff tornado is in flawless shape! Nods to Kreator, Slayer etc really are just the tip of the iceberg here, and the Brazilian squad continues to drag its fans down into a malicious maelstrom full of old school darkness…
Currently on tour in Europe I catch up with Bassist/ vocalist Fernanda Lira via telephone to chat about her musical journey and life in Nervosa and what’s next for the thrasher trio.

This week’s guest is a man holding all the credentials, not only has he been part of UK rock outfit Firebird but also Japan-based Doom band Church of Misery. With many accolades and strings to his musical bow, Australian born Tom Sutton is back with a new band The Order of Israfel. Tune in as I catch up with him to chat about the path to his latest musical creation and the upcoming album release “Red Robes”.
What the label says: Judges and cardinals don red robes. Edgar Allen Poe enshrouded death in deepest red. And now doom metal itself proudly wears the most sinful color of them all when Swedes The Order Of Israfel unleash their second longplayer Red Robes! The band`s first steps might have been heavily influenced by genre icons such as Cathedral, Pentagram and Witchcraft, but the fourpiece has firmly established its very own brand of slow-motion goodness in 2016: folk and the NWOBHM play a big role in The Order Of Israfel cosmos, but these guys also have a knack for Thin Lizzy-isms. The result is a wondrous, mystical piece of art featuring unforgettable vocals and ten-ton riffing that will haunt you for aeons!

Standing tall as one of the pioneering forces behind the UK Sludge scene, I catch up with front man Jon from Liverpool based band Conan to discuss their presence in the movement and how this underground phenomena has grown into annual festivals like Damnation, Temples and Desertfest.
With Conan signing to Napalm records and the release of the formidable ‘Blood eagle’ album in 2014 the band have been taken to new heights in their career, the release has not only been the bands most successful to date, it’s also given them the opportunity to venture out of Europe and hit North America for the first time on a headlining tour. I check in with the band at the Oakland Metro Opera house to see how the tour is shaping up and find out more about their US fans and scheduled appearances at this year’s Psycho California fest and the famous Maryland death fest.
With the release of their ground breaking album last year I discover the guys have been in the studio working on the follow up, hear more about Conan’s time in there, plus some information on their latest UK tour dates and the future plan for the sludge lords.
CONAN will kick off a UK headline tour in Edinburgh on June 5, 2015.
