Matt Harvey of Exhumed / Gruesome & Pounder on this week’s show!

Featured

Joining me on this week’s show is none other than Death metal virtuoso: Matt Harvey of Exhumed, Gruesome and his latest band Pounder.

It’s been two years since I caught up with Matt napalmdeathvovivodtour2015new_638for an interview. Last time he was out on the road with Voivod, Napalm death and Iron Reagan on the ‘Through Space and Grind’ Decibel magazine tour, promoting the Exhumed album Gore Metal Redux: A Necrospective. Since then so much has happened musically for Matt that I can barely keep up with the pace.
Back in 2015 I asked Matt about Gruesome which at that point was little more than a plan and a few demos. With the release of Closed Casket and then Hideous the noise around the band quickly blew up. Encapsulating the sound of the Florida Death metal band Death. Gruesome wanted to be tribute to Death using inspiration from each album to create their own albums.

With the debut release of Savage Land in April 21, 2015, no one knew how well the band would go on to do. With a second pressing being made by relapse it was safe to say that the band was going to be producing even more music.
Last year the EP “Dimensions of Horror” gave us yet another slice of what they can do as a band but also it would see the band inspired by the album “Scream Bloody Gore”.
A third EP “Fragments of Psyche” is set to be released on March 31st via relapse records. The EP sees the band take on a different form of Death, considering the album Human but also the appearance of Sean Reinert former Death drummer. Details of a new album have also been announced. Tune in for more…..

The Pounder chapter….

With news on the underground erupting up to the masses about Matt’s new band and the announcement that they are set to 16487573_1261022280633678_4204256853494803421_odebut their first live show at this year’s annual “Frost and Fire” festival in California. I was curious to know more
from Matt about his latest musical creation…Pounder! With a more traditional heavy metal sound/ NWOBHM the band are formulated out of Matt’s love for the genre.
Pulling together long-time friend Alejandro and ex-Angel Witch/ ex- Crowning Glory guitarist Tom Draper the lineup was complete. A brand new track was released 7th March 2017 listen to it below.

The Exhumed chapter

Now as far as Exhumed are concerned, their last release was in 2014 and there is news on a new album and also a headlining tour. Again tune in to find out more.

Nervosa join this week’s show

Listen hereFrom a self produced video to being signed to Napalm records. The short life of Nervosa has been somewhat of a rollercoaster ride. Conceived whilst in previous bands, the members gave up everything to form Nervosa. nervosab2Born on the South American road, Nervosa were soon picked up by Destruction frontman Schmier who took the band under his wing and showcased their music video via social media. Within a short time the video had gathered tens of thousands of views on youtube, earning them a great deal of noise throughout the world.

Their blinding debut album release “Victim of Yourself” sent shockwaves throughout the metal industry gaining the Brazilian trio the credibility they so richly deserve. Nervosa are now back with a second album “Agony“.

What the label says:

Brazil`s meanest power trio has returned: Nervosa indulge in relentlessly raw all-female thrash metal on their second studio album Agony that almost effortlessly merges the energy of the glorious 80s with the refined aggression of this millennium. Played even more on point and precise than debut Victim of yourself (2014), it definitely enriches the Nervosa sound having transferred the production to the USA: the South American riff tornado is in flawless shape! Nods to Kreator, Slayer etc really are just the tip of the iceberg here, and the Brazilian squad continues to drag its fans down into a malicious maelstrom full of old school darkness…

Currently on tour in Europe I catch up with Bassist/ vocalist Fernanda Lira via telephone to chat about her musical journey and life in Nervosa and what’s next for the thrasher trio.

Criminal drop in on this week’s Barnett’s Brutal Brunch show

From the get go, Criminal have been a force unto themselves. With heavy political unrest in Chile the band forged a name for themselves during the rebirth of their country in the early nineties. Quickly selling a thousand copies of their promo EP in a matter of days, the band were noticed by the big chiefs at Sony Music. Featuring on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball South America and supporting a series of well known thrash bands, Criminal would soon see themselves supporting Megadeth, opening for Metallica and even the mighty KISS.

With a strong body of work the guys are about to release their eighth album on Metal Blade records. Titled ‘Fear Itself‘ it sees Criminal return to their roots and produce some killer classic metal anthems. With ‘Down Driven’ being the first single followed by ‘Animals to Gods’ it isn’t hard to fall in love with this band all over again.

Necrophagia on this week’s Barnett’s brutal brunch show

Always on any metal-head’s list of key death metal bands Necrophagia formed a gore-soaked part of the very first wave of the genre along with Master, Morbid angel, Obituary and Death. At a time where hair, speed and thrash metal was at it’s very peak, Necrophagia found themselves with a blood thirsty need to combine their obsessive love for sleazy horror, with brutal riffs on the next level of heavy. necrophagia1
After some turbulent times, it would be one man’s love of the band (Phil Anselmo) that would instigate pulling Necrophagia back out of the foul nether, returning with the hard hitting 1998 album ‘Holocausto de la Morte’.
Due to contractual issues, Phil would take on the alias “Anton Crowley” (a combination of Anton Lavey and Aleister Crowley in case you were wondering) to fulfill his guitar duties on the album and bring Necrophagia back from the dead.
Necrophagia philSeveral changes to the line-up of the band would be a continuing factor, it would also see Necrophagia produce two more albums ‘The Divine Art of Torture’ and ‘Harvest Ritual Vol. 1’ . However, it wasn’t until the making of ‘Death trip 69’ that vocalist Killjoy would fulfill his dream of working with Casey Chaos from Amen and the former Mayhem vocalist Maniac.
Now out on a North American tour with 1349, I caught up with Killjoy at the Oakland Opera House to discuss their recent most pustulent masterpiece ‘Whiteworm cathedral’, horror movie icons and whether Necrophagia will venture to Europe this year.
